Children and Education

The Gibraltar Botanic Gardens firmly believe that it is important for children to be given the opportunity to enjoy themselves outdoors. We encourage children of all ages to discover the wonders and beauty of the natural world around them and offer opportunities for them to explore, discover and learn about the environment and how best to care for it. We do so primarily through the gardening clubs and organised activities that are run at the Alameda throughout the year.

Gardening Club

Our gardening club operates during the school months. We introduce children to general gardening skills, with a special emphasis on environmental awareness. Topics covered include:

  • Seeds and germination
  • Cultivation of vegetables
  • Pollination
  • Plants and wildlife
  • Composting and Earth Worms
  • Water conservation

Summer Fun

Our Summer Fun activities run in association with the Gibraltar Sports & Leisure Authority’s Summer Sports Programme. The summer weather allows for a fun-packed, outdoors itinerary during which children learn about:

  • Seeds and cultivation
  • Renewable energy
  • Minibeasts around the gardens
  • Animals at the Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park
  • Trees and climbing
  • Arts, crafts and games using natural and recycled materials
